Alternative Crops Session Featured at Citrus & Specialty Crop Expo

Alternative crops have always drawn interest among growers seeking to diversify their operations. During this year’s Citrus & Specialty Crop Expo, a session will be dedicated to a number of crops that have been on the alternative radar in recent years.

Bamboo has been one of the alternative crops on that list for some time in Florida. For that reason, the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences has dedicated a more robust program to study the crop’s potential in the state and has worked to develop recommendations on how to grow the crop.

Speakers will cover topics including the potential of the crop in the state. There have been new infrastructure developments recently, which would expand the potential for processing bamboo for shoots and wood products. Other topics include bamboo fertility and establishment, the economics of growing the crop and the potential for mechanical harvest.

Other alternative crops covered will include macadamia nuts and other potential fruit crops in the state.

The Citrus & Specialty Crop Expo is scheduled for Aug. 20-21 at the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa.

All preregistered growers will be automatically entered for a chance to win a John Deere gun safe, courtesy of Everglades Equipment Group.
